Jane Lena Schulman’s images in this exhibit are part of a larger series, Family Inheritances, andseek to explore the psychological, emotional, and interpersonal influence ofour primary family relationships and experiences. Traditional materials and tools have been employed as wellas methods, including multiple exposure, juxtaposition, and movement, tofacilitate the expression of the unconscious in this work.
Ms. Schulman has welcomed the “happyaccidents” that occur with this letting go of some control, but the images arepresented as “straight” photographs – in the square format for its balance andcontainment, in black and white for its symbolism, contrast, and beautifultones, and most often with maximum depth of field for its clarity and directness.
